Sunday 23rd October Aberystwyth Town 0-0 Llandudno Following last Friday's sensational 4-0 win against Rhyl, Aber were on the hunt for another 3 points against fellow Top Six hopefuls Llandudno in the second ever game on our new 3G pitch. It was an end-to-end game throughout, with both teams' attacks being cancelled out by the resolute defending on show from both backlines. Prior to kick off, a minute silence was held in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster which took the lives of 144 people, predominantly children, in 1966. The minute silence was also honoured to the tragic news of the passing of local man Eifion Gwynne, who played and worked closely with Aberystwyth RFC. As a club, we'd like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Eifion Gwynne during this most difficult time. Llandudno started the brightest, with a penalty shout turned down by the referee and a looping Gareth Evans header well-saved by Aber keeper Chris Mullock within the first 5 minutes. Aber found their feet though, with Chris Jones being Aber's bright spark down the left flank, crossing well to an empty back-post. Llandudno were back on top before long, but with increasing pressure came increased composure by Aber's back 4: Ricky Watts, Sam Rodon, Ryan Wollacott and Dan Alfei, as Wollacott made a potentially goal-saving challenge on 11 mins. Another good block by Mullock against the on-rushing Gareth Evans saw the ball roll wide as the deadlock was held. Towards the end of the first half, Aber's best spell of possession saw Luke Borrelli's left-footed volley collected by former Seasider Dave Roberts. Another committed challenge by Ryan Wollacott saw the first half draw to a goalless close in front of the 548 spectators. The second half began with a beautifully lofted free kick by Chris Jones finding the diving head of captain Luke Sherbon, whose effort hit the crossbar to the relief of former Aber manager Alan Morgan. With Aber on top, chances came and passed with crosses not finding a target and headed balls finding the gloves of Roberts. Following a good 15 minutes by Aber, Llandudno saw their best chance of the game with the bright Lewis Buckley beating the offside trap, only to smash the outside of the post in a 1-on-1 with Mullock. The final 30 minutes were cautious but competitive, with both sides attacking and looking for a winner, but not wanting to concede one themselves. Aber's Kurtis March and Chris Jones combined well with Jones being released down the right, only for his shot to be stopped by Roberts. It wasn't until centre-back Will Bell entered the field of play on 87 mins, replacing Luke Sherbon, did Aber get their best chance on goal, with the makeshift central-midfielder cushioning a side-footed strike from 25 yards that looked destined to break Llandudno hearts, only for Roberts to pull off a brilliant finger-tip save to deny his fellow Liverpudlian. History did not repeat itself when Aber gained a last minute corner which was cleared by the well-organised Llandudno defence, which was followed by referee Kevin Parry's final whistle. A fair result in the end, with both defences holding strong against the pressures of the opposite team's attack. Aber will now look forward to next Saturday's WPL game vs Airbus UK Broughton, which will be live on S4C's Sgorio, kick-off being at 5:15 at Park Avenue. The club would like to thank the fans for their continued support and hope to see an equally impressive following next week! Aberystwyth Town FC will be hosting a 3G Family Open Day on Sunday 23rd October, and we hope to see you there! The free event will represent a highpoint of the Club's work with the Community, and traditionally attracts between 250-300 additional supporters through the gate for a high profile Dafabet Welsh Premier League match. The home game with Llandudno on Sunday, October 23rd will be Aber's second ever league match on Park Avenue's new 3G pitch. The event will consist of a number of activities on the 3G and around the ground to entertain and amuse supporters of all ages, but particularly children and families. Penalty shoots out with our Club Mascot Sami the Seagull have proven very popular in the past, as have informal Football Coaching Sessions ran by our Academy Staff. Fun Football, aimed at the younger age group, will also be showcased as will Disability Football, which will be co-delivered by our Aber Stars Club and the FAW Trust (please note that the Club encourages all those who wish to participate in 3G Sessions to wear moulded studs). Behind the scenes Guided Tours of Park Avenue Stadium are also on offer, bringing out the stories created by the Club's 85 years continuous use of the ground, while our in house caterers Ruth's Kitchen host their traditional and much lived Sunday Lunch in the John Charles Lounge. This all acts as a build up to the Main Event, a Dafabet Welsh Premier League match against Llandudno, and those attending the 3G Family Open Day are of course allowed to remain within the ground free of charge to watch it. The kick off time for this game is at 3pm and the Family Fun Day begins at 11.30am. Please keep an eye on Town's website atfc.org.uk, twitter @aberystwythtown, Youtube Channel, "Green Army" Facebook page or the local press for more details closer to the event. Consider yourself invited on October 23rd and we look forward to meeting you and your family! Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Sunday 23rd October (ko 3pm) Aberystwyth Town v Llandudno Preceded by FREE Family 3G Open Day from 11.30am-1.30pm Aberystwyth Town will aim to feed off the euphoria of last Friday's stunning 4-0 win over Rhyl when they host Llandudno on Sunday afternoon, aiming for a positive result to cement their place in the list of Dafabet Welsh Premier League Top Six Contenders before the nights draw in. A 65 yard goal from keeper Chris Mullock, a headed score from Geoof Kellaway and two further strikes from the hard working Luke Borrelli, allied to a 15 year record crowd of 1168 all added up to a night which was as close to perfect as Aber were likely to get last week, and Town will look to harness the latent enthusiasm of the fourteenth by putting on a FREE Family 3G Open Day from 11.30am prior to the game, which should ensure a good portion of young Black and Greens supporters get their chance to watch Matthew Bishop's men. The return of Luke Sherbon and Geoff Kellaway was huge for Aber last week, and Bishop will be hoping that they are fit to play following a nine day lay off, as well as Chris Jones who also looked to be back to top form last week. The clean sheet earned by Mullock, Ricky Watts, Sam Rodon, Ryan Wollacott and Dan Alfei has passed under the radar somewhat but another strong defensive performance on Sunday will set the Black and Greens up for another important result. Meanwhile Greg Walters has been released to return to Haverfordwest County with best wishes from everyone at Park Avenue. Llandudno did the double over Aber last season and although they have had a mixed start to 2016/7, Town will know they have some talented players who can click to devastating effect under ex Aber Manager Alan Morgan. Dave Roberts, who kept goal for Aber in the 2009 Welsh Cup Final, is certain to start for Llandudno between the sticks. Admission on Sunday will be free for those attending the 3G Family Open Day, and £6 for Adults, £4 Concession and £1 for Kids thereafter. Ruth's Kitchen will be offering their much loved Sunday lunch in the John Charles Lounge from 11.45am onwards, so once again Park Avenue will be the place to be this weekend. We'll see you there. Aberystwyth Town Football Club will be delighted to support valued Club Sponsors Morrisons' relaunch of their Aberystwyth Store tomorrow morning.
The new look store (Parc Y Llyn, SY23 3TL) is set to relaunch on Thursday 20th October with a ribbon cutting at 9am. The Club will be represented by Club Directors David Evans and Anthony Evans, who will do a short bilingual speech on the Sponsorship history, Geoff Kellaway who will be cutting the ribbons, and representatives from the Ladies and Aber Stars disability teams. Aberystwyth Town are supplying a signed first team shirt, a signed ball and free usage of the Executive Box for a Dafabet Welsh Premier League match for the raffle. The ribbon cutting will kick off a day of events at the store including food sampling, face painting, a local school choir (10am - 11am) and a chance to meet the football teams. Our Friends at Morrisons have sent us the following event overview: “We asked our store customers what they would like to change at the Aberystwyth store to make it easier for them to shop. We listened to their suggestions and used them to create their ideal supermarket. After a eight week makeover, the store will relaunch on Thursday with a new look and extra facilities for customers. What’s changed at Morrisons Aberystwyth?
Aberystwyth Town FC would like to encourage our Supporters to attend the relaunch to celebrate the long term partnership between Morrisons and the Club. Aberystwyth Town Goalkeeper Chris Mullock has certainly made the headlines this week, with his 65 yard goal from a free kick, scored on Friday night against Rhyl, being rightly shared on social media far and wide. Anyone with knowledge of the Mullock family tree however would have known that Aber were signing the grandson of a fearsome striker with an astonishing goal per game ratio for Aber in the 1950s. A conversation with Chris' family after the game on Friday night uncovered the fact that Grandfather Joe Mullock played as a striker for the Black and Greens in the 1950s. Further research via "The Old Black and Green" (Aber Town's History Book covering 1884-1984) reveals that Wrexham-based Mullock joined Town in 1952/3 - Aber's first of eleven consecutive seasons played in the Welsh League (South) - and went on to notch a remarkable 17 goals in 16 games to finish joint top scorer that season with Gordon Rees. The Old Black and Green sadly does not record any 65 yard goals for Joe Mullock - however we now know for sure that his goalscoring genes were passed on! Welsh Premier Women's League
Sunday 16th October Aberystwyth Town Ladies 0 Swansea City 6 Aber Ladies played their first game on the new 3G facility against high flying Swansea Ladies last Sunday and found the going tough against a very good Swansea side who ensured there was no dream start for the Ladies on the new pitch. Swansea only took 3 minutes to get on the score sheet when from a free kick Stacy John lashed home after a melee in the box. The visitors continued to press and the Aber girls were finding it tough to get any foothold in the game but they battled for everything and with Thomas, Evans and skipper Ffi Evans working hard Aber began to show signs of getting into the game. Jenkins and Roberts up front were getting at the Swansea back four and from a couple of corners were unlucky with a few efforts. However with seconds left of the first half a mazy run ended when Ria Hughes scored the second goal just on the brink of half time. That was a cruel blow to Aber as they had been holding the Swansea attack at bay. A more positive start to the second half by Aber with young Helen Evans becoming more prominent with her strong running almost got Aber back into the game and they were despite Swansea having a lot of possession holding them at bay. The third goal however was a well worked and taken effort by Hancocks in the 69th minute which put the game to bed and with further goals coming in the 80th, 89th and 92nd minute the points went to South Wales. Despite the setback Aber remain 5th in the table and look forward to a more positive result in the next game. Next up for Aber is a long trip North to Kinmel Bay in the Welsh Cup. |
