Pre Season Friendly Saturday 22nd July (ko 2.30pm) Aberystwyth Town v Haverfordwest County Park Avenue hosts Neville Powell's second match in charge of Aberystwyth Town this Saturday - and his first in the dug out as the Black and Greens host Welsh League big hitters Haverfordwest County with a 2.30pm kick off. James Loveridge's dramatic 93rd minute strike caused Aber to lost their opening friendly at home to Llanelli 4-3, and Powell spent the entire match watching the game from the elevated heights of the gantry. He offered an honest assessment to Aber Town's Youtube Channel after the game, saying: "It was a good competitive game. The result doesn't matter, but obviously we need three or four experienced Welsh Premier players, The Squad (needs) leaders if we're going to compete, we need experience and winners." Saturday's visitors will be as familiar as last week boasting as they do a number of players who have donned the Black and Green in the past: Steff Williams, Greg Walters, Ricky Watts, Sam Rodon and new Manager Tim Hicks to name but five! County finished fourth in last year's Welsh League Division One and will be looking to mount a title challenge this season with a strong squad. Town used twenty players last weekend, including four trialists and five under 19s Players, and with a further three weeks remain until the big kick off, Powell can be expected to run the rule over further personnel on Saturday. Early Bird Season Tickets and and Season Ticket Renewals will be available for £90 from Club Secretary Emyr James on Saturday and an Application Form can be downloaded below. Admission will cost £4 for Adults and £2 for Kids and Kick off at Park Avenue is at 2.30pm. See you there! Aber Town Ladies continued their pre-season preparation on Sunday by impressing in a very competitive 7-a-side tournament at Newtown’s Latham Park writes Steven Brookes. Aber Ladies have only had 2 training sessions so far this season and were already looking forward to being back playing competitive football again after the summer break. In Sunday's tournament the teams were split into 2 groups, each team in the group playing each other once and Aber began the day with a 3-0 victory against Tregaron Blues. Tania Wylde opened the scoring for Aber in the first half with a low shot into the bottom corner. In an improved second half that Aber dominated, Steph Land doubled the lead and Ffiona Evans scored the third and final goal from a tight angle. Up next was Caernarfon who are now playing in the Welsh Women’s Premier League. The match may have finished 0-0 but on another day Aber could have scored multiple goals. The Greens were denied by the post twice whilst the Caernarfon goalkeeper made numerous impressive saves. Aber were then back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory against Llanfair. An unfortunate own goal from Ffiona Evans put the Llanfair Ladies team ahead but a goal just before half time from Helen Evans levelled the scores before the break. Wylde then doubled her goal tally for the day but the goal of the match and possibly the day was by the impressive Steph Land who spotted the goalkeeper off her line and managed to lob the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. The Greens followed this up with an impressive 4-0 victory against Llandrindod Wells. Aber dominated the game straight from kick off. ‘Landy’ was on the scoresheet again and so was Ffiona Evans with a great volley at the back post. Tania Wylde then made it three before half time. Helen Evans made it four in the second half to complete a superb victory and performance from the Ladies Team. Aber’s final match was against a very good TNS side. TNS started the better team and got the opening goal. Wylde was causing the TNS team problems and eventually levelled the scores just after the break. Aberystwyth Ladies Keeper Katie Christopher made some important saves in goal but a controversial second from TNS put them 2-1 ahead. Steph Land nearly got a second for the team in Black and Green but her overhead kick went narrowly wide of the post. Aber were unable to find an equaliser and it unfortunately meant they failed to qualify for the final stages on goal difference. The Greens would be right to feel very proud of their performances today and will probably feel they deserved to go further in the competition. Aberystwyth Ladies will now turn their focus back to the 11 aside matches with many Pre Season Friendlies coming up soon as well as the new league season. Pre Season Friendly
Saturday 15th July Aberystwyth Town 3 Llanelli 4 Visitors Llanelli notched two injury time goals to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat at Park Avenue this afternoon, in Aberystwyth Town's first Pre Sesaon Friendly of 2017/8, as strikes from Lee Trundle (2), an own goal from Ryan Wollacott and James Loveridge outscored Town's tally from Malcolm Melvin, Cledan Davies and Jonny Spittle. Aber started the game extremely well and dominated proceedings with Geoff Kellaway bringing a save out of Craig Morris, only for the visitors to score on their first attack from a predictable source, as Trundle's 12th minute free kick found the top corner. Aber equalised within ten minutes as Morris punched Kellaway's cross to Melvin, who volleyed home smartly from the edge of the box; but four minutes later a defensive mix up alowed Jordan Davies to set Trundle up for a lobbed second. Back came Aber and when Jon Owen was fouled in the box by Lee Bevan, Cledan Davies stepped up to equlise again with a 28th minute penalty. Mullock denied Richard Lewis with a smart stop and the half ended all square at 2-2. Four half time substitutions for Aber and three for Llanelli disrupted the flow of the game which became a scrappy affair until Cledan Davies' corner was headed home by Spittle to put the Black and Greens in the lead for the first time with 21 minutes to go, and Melvin was so close to doubling the lead with an audacious lob from halfway which Morris just managed to tip wide. With the game fizzing out Aber made five late substitutions and the visitors were able to capitalise as Trundle's 90th minute corner was headed against the post by Lee Bevan, only to deflect in off the back of Wollacott's head, before James Loveridge snaffled up a 93rd minute winner with a low drive into the corner. Manager Neville Powell watched the game from the gantry and will be hoping for a better defensive performance in next Saturday's friendly, at home to Haverfordwest County (ko 2.30pm). First Team Footy's Back at Park Avenue as Black and Greens Host Llanelli Tomorrow Afternoon14/7/2017
Pre Season Friendly Saturday 15th July (ko 2.30pm) Aberystwyth Town v Llanelli Town First Team football returns to Park Avenue tomorrow afternoon as new Town Manager Neville Powell oversees the Black and Greens' first friendly of pre season 2017, at home to Welsh League Division Two Champions and League Cup Holders Llanelli Town. Town's Squad has seen some turnover over pre-season with four new players added to the strong cohort who remained from last season. Goalkeeper Chris Mullock, defenders Cledan Davies and Ryan Wollacott, midfielders Malcolm Melvin, Jack Rimmer, Jamie Crowther and Dafydd Jones, and strikers Luke Borelli, Geoff Kellaway and Jon Owen provide a strong and familiar spine to a squad recently enhanced by the acquisitions of defender Jonny Spittle, midfielders Joe Phillips and James Etherington and keeper Scott Coughlan. Black and Green supporters can also expect to see some of Town's Under 19s squad filling out the squad tomorrow, as Powell runs the rule over his charges for the first time. Llanelli for their part contain in their Squad a number of Players to have donned the Black and Green, amongst them goalkeeper Craig Morris, midfielders Anthony Finselbach, Joe Clarke and Kurtis March and striker Jordan Follows. They also have the irrepressible Lee Trundle whose fifty goal haul in Welsh League Division Two last season became a nationwide story. The Reds are certain to provide a very tough test as they prepare for a season back in the second tier of Welsh Football - and potentially even a push for the Welsh Premier League. Early Bird Season Tickets and and Season Ticket Renewals will be available for £90 from Club Secretary Emyr James on Saturday and an Application Form can be downloaded below. It is three months to the day since Town's last home game when a huge crowd saw Aber secure their WPL status with a memorable 4-0 win over Rhyl on a rainy Good Friday. Admission will cost £4 for Adults and £2 for Kids and Kick off at Park Avenue is at 2.30pm. Welcome back!!
Two days on from his appointment as First Team Manager at Aberystwyth Town FC, Neville Powell gave his first interview to atfc.org.uk this afternoon, and he was on fine form ahead of tomorrow afternoon's first friendly of 2017, against Llanelli at Park Avenue (ko 2.30pm). Welcome to Aber Nev. How does it feel to be back? "It feels fantastic! I've been out for nine months and was itching to get back, then Aber gave me the chance!" What are your impressions of the Club so far? "I met everyone at the Club last night and they made me feel really welcome. I'd love to repay them by getting the Club up the League. The set up is great, Aber Town has everything and it's a proper Football Club. The team may have underachieved recently but I'll be looking to get us back where we should be. Working with enthusiastic people like Wayne Jones gives me the buzz to want to do well. " Having met the squad for the first time last night what are your impressions? "It's a good group of players which is very attack minded. Hopefully with a few more additions we'll do well. We'll start defending from the front: everyone has a responsibility there and we will work on that. We just need a bit more experience and I'm sure we'll improve on last year's finish." What are your thoughts on next season? "We definitely should be challenging for the Top Six. This is the big aim for every team in the League and we are no different. There are a lot of competitive teams in the League now but if we are well organised and hard to beat, and our front three of Kellaway, Owen and Borrelli can chip in with ten goals each we'll be fine. The margins can be quite narrow so being well organised, keeping things simple and having a good spirit is what I've done at other Clubs. We'll do that at Aber and if we can add the right Players and get 110% off everyone, we'll be successful." Do you have a message for the supporters? "As a Player and Manager coming here as the away team, you always thought you were going to get a tough game and Park Avenue seemed a bit of a fortress, especially on Friday nights. We want to make the place a Fortress again and if we start well, the crowds will go up and become our 12th man. If we win our home games we won't be far away from the Top Six. We need to produce a team to attract the fans and I can't wait to get started. The Club is thriving to be successful and I'd love to bring that to the Club." Neville Powell will be attending his first match as Aber Town Manager tomorrow afternoon as the Black and Greens host Llanelli with a 2.30pm kick off. A Match preview will follow later. Aberystwyth Town are delighted to name Neville Powell as their new First Team Manager. Powell, who revalidated his A Licence in May 2017, replaces previous Manager Tony Pennock, who was released to rejoin Hull City last month. Nev ensured legendary status as Manager at Bangor City FC after leading the Club to a Welsh Premier League title in 2010/11 and Welsh Cup Final wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He also earned five WPL Manager of the Month Awards and two WPL Manager of the Year Awards in 2010 and 2011, and won the Welsh League Cup as Manager of Connah's Quay in 1996. Chairman Donald Kane said: "Nev's Stature within Welsh Football, his experience within the League, and the extensive contacts he has within the game marked him out as an outstanding candidate for the job, and as a Club we are delighted to have recruited him as First Team Manager. Nev and Assistant Manager Wayne Jones have already had extensive discussions with regards to preparations for next season and both look forward to working with each other, starting this week." It is hoped that Neville Powell will be available to oversee his First Match as Manager of Aberystwyth Town FC on Saturday when the Black and Greens welcome Llanelli to Park Avenue for a Pre Season Friendly (ko 2.30pm). Everyone at Park Avenue welcomes Nev to the Club and we are eagerly looking forward to the forthcoming season! |
