JD Cymru Premier
Friday 21st January Penybont 4 Aberystwyth Town 0 Aber Town suffered a very bad day at the office on their JD Cymru Premier return with a heavy four goal defeat at Penybont. Ben Ahmun scored an early hat trick (8,15 and 21 minutes) to settle the outcome early on, resurgent Aber saw Alex Darlington sent off on the hour before Nathan Wood added a fourth on 77 minutes for the rampant hosts who were extremely impressive on the night. Despite a positive start for the visitors, who were roared on by a superb away support, Bont were ahead within the first ten minutes as Ahmun capitalised on a collision between Aber’s Louis Bradford and Gregor Zabret to prod home the opener. Bradford was carried from the field with a nasty looking injury, to be replaced by Owen Orford. Zabret denied Sam Snaith a second but then Ahmun broke from the half way line to slip the ball under Zabret for a second, with Aber all at sea. Penybont’s swift attacks were causing the visitors all sorts of problems but Ahmun’s third came from a corner, delivered by Kane Owen and touched in at the near post by Penybont’s hat trick hero. With the game over to all intents and purposes a quarter of the way through Aber faced a tough challenge and Nathan Wood went close to making it four at the near post. Lewis Harling fired wide from the edge of the area, and Mael Davies and Owen both had shots deflected away for corners, and a totally one sided half ended at 3-0. The visitors changed formation and brought on Steff Davies and Darlington at half time, and after repelling a couple of shots from the home side, Aber played their way back into the game. John Owen ran the length of the pitch and curled just over from the left flank, then Jack Rimmer set up Davies who headed straight at Ash Morris in the home goal. Kane Owen cut inside and fired over for Penybont, then Darlington saw a straight red for a tough tackle, and Aber’s task got even harder. Zabret denied Kane Owen, then at the other end an astonishing period of Aber dominance ensued. John Owen smashed a superb shot against the post from the right; the indefatigable Steff Davies had another shot saved for a corner, then Lee Jenkins played a one two before feeding Davies who shot just wide. The visiting fans sensed a goal and started singing again, and John Owen was next at it, hitting a goalbound shot which deflected onto the crossbar, then after a series of corners Lee Jenkins headed just wide. John Owen side footed a shot straight at Morris, and then, seemingly inevitably Penybont broke and scored against the run of play, as Wood tapped home from close range. Cameron Allen, son of Gavin, came on for his Aber debut up front, and as the match moved into injury time the Aber supporters started up a wall of noise which lasted for at least five minutes, and send the Black and Greens back into the dressing room knowing that despite this bad result, their supporters still had their backs. Antonio Corbisiero and his players will want to repay that level of loyalty shown by their fans at Penybont, and they have the opportunity to do so next Friday evening as Cefn Druids come to Park Avenue for an 8pm kick off. Faith springs eternal! Aberystwyth Town can announce that youngster Richy Ricketts has joined Ardal North East side Bow Street on loan until the end of the season.
19-year-old Richy has been a mainstay in and around the ATFC first team since he burst onto the scene before the 2019/20 season after an impressive pre-season. The ex-Penweddig pupil has amassed 20 senior appearances (17 at ATFC, 3 at Penrhyncoch) and provided three assists to date, two of which came against Aber Valley FC in this year's Welsh Cup run. The youngster will now spend the second half of this season at Cae Piod to gain valuable senior minutes. Manager Antonio Corbisiero commented: "Richy is a fantastic young player with bags of potential who just needs minutes under his belt at the senior level, so we're pleased to send him to Bow Street for the second half of this season. Going forward, Rich remains a huge part of our squad for next season, and this chance to play regularly will benefit him hugely. He'll be a great asset for Bow Street and we're very keen to go watch him play when we're able - all the best to Rich for his loan move and to Bow Street going forward!" Penybont vs Aberystwyth Town
Friday 21st January JD Cymru Premier 7.45pm KO Aberystwyth Town return to JD Cymru Premier action for the first time in 5 weeks tonight for a visit to the SDM Glass Stadium in Bridgend to face Penybont FC. The Black & Greens last match before the suspension of the league due to the rise of the Omicron variant of Covid was an entertaining 3-3 draw at Caernarfon Town which saw Harry Franklin & Matty Jones on the scoresheet – Jones scoring twice from the spot. This result meant that Aber entered the enforced break in 10th position, with exactly 17 points from the opening 17 games. Antonio Corbisiero’s team also boast one of the meanest defences in the league as things stand, with only The New Saints, Newtown, Connahs Quay and tomorrow nights hosts Penybont having conceded less goals so far. Penybont, led by former Seasider Rhys Griffiths, are having another excellent season in the JD Cymru Premier. They currently sit well placed in 4th position, and entered the break on a run of 3 wins in their last 5 matches. Overall, they have accumulated 27 points from 17 games. There has already been some transfer activity at the SDM Glass Stadium this month, with midfielder Kai Whitmore joining from Ammanford and top scorer James Waite departing for Newport County. Waite had netted 8 goals in his 17 outings this season, but Penybont can still call on the services of Sam Snaith who has netted 7 in 15 himself and Lewis Harling, who has 5 in 17. The clubs have already met twice this season, both at Park Avenue. The first meeting was in the Nathaniel MG Cup and saw Aber triumph 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, whilst the league meeting saw Penybont take all three points with a 3-0 victory in October. This match kicks off a busy period for ATFC with Cefn Druids visiting Park Avenue next Friday evening (28th) before home and away ties against Haverfordwest County – the home match on 1st February being the clubs 1000th match in the Cymru Premier! This is followed by consecutive trips to Bala in the Welsh Cup and the League on the following two weekends. Tickets are available on the gate at the SDM Glass Stadium tomorrow night, priced at £7 for Adults, £5 for Concessions and £2 for Under 16’s. The stadium can be found on Llangewydd Road, Bridgend and the postcode for your sat-nav is CF31 4JU. Cymru Premier Football is back!! The Black and Greens will then host Cefn Druids on Friday 28th January (ko 8pm), with three further phase I Cymru Premier fixtures to be confirmed in February at home and away to Haverfordwest and away at Bala Town. The first of these games will be Aberystwyth Town FC's 1000th match in the Cymru Premier and the Seasiders will become the first Club to reach this significant milestone. The FAW announcement on Friday read as follows: "The Football Association of Wales has welcomed the news communicated by the First Minister at today’s (14 January) Welsh Government Coronavirus Update that restrictions on spectators at sporting events are to be lifted. The number of people who can attend football matches across Wales will rise from 50 to 500 as and from tomorrow (15 January), with full capacity crowds being allowed from Friday, 21 January as the country continues its return to Alert Level 0. Ahead of the 2021/22 season, the FAW factored in COVID-19 related disruptions into its planning with some leagues starting their seasons earlier than normal to counteract such an impact. In December, the FAW’s National League Board took the decision to suspend the Cymru Leagues, Adran Leagues and Ardal Leagues over the festive period due to the restrictions placed upon spectator numbers as a result of the omicron variant of COVID-19. This decision was taken to limit the loss of income for clubs and to provide the best chance for fans not to miss out on supporting their teams. Today’s news is therefore pleasing, as fans can now return to supporting domestic football across the country having not missed out on any of the action. The Welsh Government announcement is also positive news for The Red Wall ahead of Cymru’s FIFA World Cup Play-Off Semi-Final against Austria in Cardiff on 24 March, however, the Covid Pass will likely remain a requirement for entry into large capacity stadiums. Therefore, the FAW highlights the importance of people receiving two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination and the booster vaccine. More information on vaccines can be found by visiting the Public Health Wales website." Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce an extension to Louis Bradford's initial six-month loan from TNS until the end of the 2021/22 season, making it two full seasons at Park Avenue for the youngster.
Wolverhampton-born Louis joined TNS Academy at U15 level following time with Shrewsbury Town, where he impressed at youth level to secure himself a loan move in the JD Cymru Premier last season. Still just 19 years old, Louis is tall and agile defender who has shown his proficiency through the middle or as a right-back throughout his time at Park Avenue, making 25 starts, scoring twice and assisting thrice during the 2020/21 campaign, adding a further 17 starts, 2 goals and an assist so far through 2021/22. Antonio Corbisiero told us: "We're ecstatic that Bradders has agreed to stay for the rest of the season - he's a real up and coming talent with huge potential who brings experience of the professional environment to our young squad. He's developed fantastically since first joining us last summer, so we're hopeful that he can continue to contribute and help us climb the table. Welcome back Bradders!" |
